Sylvia Conkey has been a "Friend'" since the Friends of the Clapp Memorial Library was formed in 1977.
Sylvia's greatest pleasure is reading, and the Library has always been so important to her. You may have met Sylvia at one of the Friends' many Book Sale...she always volunteered as a cashier.
While she knows the economy won't support it at this time, Sylvia strongly feels that we need more Library space. "It is time," she says and she hopes to live to see a new Library space.

Fall/Winter 2009: The Friends would like to express our gratitude to Randy Prescott, a long-time Friend. In addition to lots of other talents, Randy has used his amazing woodworking skills to build bookshelves for the Library. His newest project is a much-needed Young Adult bookshelf; the Friends are supplying the wood and materials...Randy is supplying the labor!
Randy arrived in Belchertown in 1995 via Pelham, Pittsfield and Amherst. For 34 years, he loved teaching junior and senior high school industrial arts as well as woodworking for adults. He was named Massachusetts Industrial Arts Teacher in 1982!
Randy defines "retirement" by using his skills at Clapp Memorial Library, Belchertown Senior Center, his church and wherever he is called. You may see him about town in his restored yellow '54 Chevy pickup.
Thank you Randy! We can't wait to see the new shelf!

Summer 2009: The summer season brings in a new Featured Friend. If you see him around the Library, be sure to say "hi" to Mike Peters!
Mike, originally from Southern California, was a professor of Entomology at University of Massachusetts for more than 33 years. He moved to Belchertown in 1985 and lives on an "antique colonial" farm, where, in his spare time, he makes fiberglass animal heads and displays them out his barn windows! Mike also makes several kinds of wine from fruit grown on the farm.
Mike has been a Friend of Clapp Memorial Library for several years...lately he's been very active during the semi-annual Book Sales. In fact, Friends' President Jane Crutchfield says Mike "has morphed into a great Book Sale cashier!"
Thank you, Mike, for *all* of your contributions and hard work!
