Ice Cream ConeThe Summer Reading Program is a statewide program that encourages kids to read (and be read to) throughout the summer. Typically the program has a kick-off in June (run by Children's Librarian Jennifer Whitehead), with an celebration scheduled during the second week of August for all children who complete the program successfully (read for at least 8 hours and complete a short book report or review).

Many of the duties of the volunteer Coordinator(s) center around the program-ending celebration in August, and include:

  • Coordinate food selection;
  • Supply paper goods;
  • Delegate tasks to volunteers;
  • Solicit donations as necessary;
  • Thank all those who donated their time, money and supplies;
  • Prepare Book Sale Gift Certificates for Junior Volunteers.

It would be optimal if the new Coordinators started as soon as possible. This will allow for time to learn the responsibilities of the positions before soliciting donations begins in May. If you are interested in learning more about the positions, please contact the Friends ( This e-mail address is being protected from spambots.
